The sitter, as the Latin inscription states, was an official of the French judiciary, but is portrayed with a certain amount of good humor, to judge from his benign expression. The elaborate surrounding sets him off vividly, imitating the frame on a painting. The importance and dignity of the sitter is emphasized by his coat of arms underneath. Such images were commemorative as well as documentary and meant to emphasize the sitter's status to future generations.
