Gallery LabelGao Shiqi (1645–1703), a famous writer and artist, poses as a fisherman. Scholars regarded fishermen as embodiments of an ideal lifestyle, because they freely traveled the rivers and lakes unencumbered by official obligations. Although the title of the painting refers to summer, the willow and female servant serving wine or tea evoke the pleasures of spring.
