Sitting in the center of a busy home garden, a senior woman confidently reveals her unbound feet under her long blue robe. Her robe, shoes, and three rings on either ear indicate she is Manchu, people who came from northeast Asia to rule the Qing dynasty. As in other Chinese families, her male descendants may have commissioned this portrait to honor her. Surrounding her are pine trees, cranes, and deer, which are symbols of longevity.
