Look closely at the sparrows and peonies: they are superbly painted with fine details. The painter juxtaposes neat and meticulous strokes for the sparrows, butterflies and peonies with loose, relaxed brushstrokes for the garden rocks. The rich colors and fine lines reflect splendidly on the silk ground, giving the image an exquisite, almost extravagant display of a garden corner. One of the leading artists in the genre of flower painting, Shen Quan was celebrated for his ornamental style that influenced the Nagasaki School in Japan.
