DescriptionThinly painted semi-abstract compostition of flat, rectilinear gray, black, white, and yellow planes with superimposed black lines in curved and straight contours, one, center, forming a bottle shape.Gallery Label1954 (winter: white Seal) is an example of Ben Nicholson's Cubist-inspired landscape paintings in which overlapping planes and forms are suggested by simple lines of contour. The resultant space is shallow, precisely defined and subtly balanced. Thin layers of paint have been gently abraded to accentuate the surface texture and further emphasize the shallow space. Together with his choice of a monochromatic palette, these elements evoke the taut spareness of the season and the place where the work was painted.
