With his head cast down and resting on the pommel of his long sword, this soldier stands in silent contemplation. This print is one in a series of 62 etchings of figures produced by landscape painter Salvator Rosa. Seeking to demonstrate his mastery of the human form, Rosa depicted his figures in a wide variety of poses. Warriors appeared alone or in groups, gesturing wildly or resting quietly, turned away from or facing the viewer. Often acquired as a book of prints, these images helped spread the artist’s fame throughout Europe.
