Hamburg, Germany’s most significant harbor on the North Sea, is the subject of Emil Nolde’s etching. Through muted tones and delicate lines, he conveyed a sense of contemplative moodiness. Nolde, who spent his early years on a farm in the North Sea-Baltic peninsula, had an ever-enduring fascination with the sea.
