Salvator Rosa was best known for his wild landscapes, but he sometimes invented complex allegories like this example. The “genius” of the artist is represented by the reclining young man. He offers his heart to a figure holding a dove, symbolizing peace, under which the arts flourish. The woman placing the liberty cap on her head signifies artistic freedom, and the kneeling woman to the left with a canvas represents painting.
