Dr. Stein, Vienna [1];

With A. S. Drey, New York, by November 28, 1933-1934, as King August of Saxony represented as a Free-Mason [2];

Purchased from A. S. Drey by The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1934.

NOTES:

[1] According to documentation provided by A. S. Drey, copies in NAMA curatorial file. The identity of Dr. Stein is uncertain, although one possibility is Rudolf Stein of Brno, Czechoslovakia, part of whose collection of German and Viennese porcelain was sold at Glückselig, Vienna in March 1924. The Nelson-Atkins figure was not in this sale, but a number of similar objects were included.

[2] A. S. Drey lent this object to the Nelson-Atkins opening exhibition, and it arrived at the museum November 29, 1933. It remained on loan until the Nelson-Atkins purchased the piece from Drey in January 1934.
