Gallery LabelSandro Chia's tormented figure falls to his knees and covers his ears as if trying to protect himself from a high-pitched, continuous scream. The red color of the figure may suggest scalded skin. The artist captures the plight of modern man in his disconnected loneliness through the rapid execution and rawness of his drawing gesture. Chia was part of the Neo-Expressionist movement of the 1980s that was marked by intense subjectivity of feeling and an aggressive handling of materials.
