This footed salver, sometimes called a tazza, is the only completely gilded piece in the Folgers Collection.  A creation of the brief partnership of Digby Scott and Benjamin Smith, the salver was commissioned by the Scarsdale family of Derbyshire whose coat of arms is engraved in the center.  The detailed grape clusters forming the edge, along with the base's oak leaves and acorns, reflect the revival of classical motifs.  The salver was fitting to the Scarsdale family home Kedleston Hall, which was designed by Robert Adam, who promoted the Neoclassical style in England.
