DescriptionIn the top center, a bearded male figure wearing either a halo or a hat brim pulls back the metal grate of a cubic box. He is wearing a white shirt and a patterned apron. He stands on a shelf. A woman is seated on the shelf with her proper right leg extended and wraps her arm around his leg. She has shoulder length pale hair, a grey dress, and a black mid-calf on the extended leg. A mix of messy contents is spilling out of the box, hard to tell what they are. A woman in a short black dress and short socks leans into the box searching for something – the dog, perhaps? On the left, two hinged sides of the box have come off. A small boy facing right emerges from the grate that makes up one of the sides, his arms stretched out. On the right side of the print, a tall tree with droopy branches. A pale-haired woman in a black medieval-style dress with a white belt and trim stands with two small children who look to the left. At the bottom, two pleated, bellows-like supports hole up the box. No dog in sight.Provenance
