InscribedPrinted captions on paper, attached to mount verso, in black type: "Rice Seller. / These perambulating vendors of the / great staple article of food in the East, / retail the small quantities of coarse or / fine Rice required for the purchaser's / meal for a few cash--they are generally / employed by the larger shopkeepers, or / supplied by them with a stock, on the sale / of which they receive a small per centage, / the buyers, who are generally coolies or / those of the lowest class purchase the / raw article, and get it cooked at the little / wayside stalls, the time required for boil- / ing is from 25 to 30 minutes during / which chatting and smoking go on / cheerily.--The scale, a sort of steel-yard / only made of wood, is very correct, and / although it is generally supposed by the / uninitiated that advantage can be take / by the user, it is not so, as the use of / this measure is so universal that the / slightest error in the weight is at one / detected."
