InscribedPrinted captions on paper, attached to mount verso, in black type: "China Chair. / The China chair, carried on the / shoulders of two, or sometimes four coo- / lies is a luxurious mode of locomotion-- / When the uncertain sort of feeling of / fear of being suddenly overturned, or / dropped has been overcome, and habit has / accustomed the traveller to the motion / which is wonderfully easy and springy-- / the luxury of a good chair with lance- / wood poles is fully appreciated-- / [¶] Practised chair coolies will often / travel at a rate of from five to six English / miles an hour and as much as forty miles / in a day.--"
