DescriptionHalf-plate daguerreotype portrait of a dentist (seated) resting his hand on a set of false teeth and displaying the frightening contents of his instrument case by his side; light tinting on the subject's cheeks; presented in full leather case with a detached cover; original seals.Gallery Label

It was common in the daguerreian era (ca. 1840-1860) to sit for an occupational portrait.  In these images, men and occasionally women would proudly pose with the tools of their trade or objects that would show their personal or professional talents. This dentist displays his tools and a set of false teeth which he would have carried with him when making house calls.
