It was common in the daguerreian era (ca. 1840-1860) to sit for an occupational portrait. In these images, men and occasionally women would proudly pose with the tools of their trade or objects that would show their personal or professional talents. This dentist displays his tools and a set of false teeth which he would have carried with him when making house calls.
