DescriptionImage of a castle and a swan swimming in the moat at night.Gallery Label

This early work by Diane Arbus documents an architectural and cultural fiction: Cinderella’s castle at Disneyland in California. Photographed at night and lit from below, the structure looms eerily over its reflection. The dark atmosphere in this image of a fairytale replica serves, perhaps, as a critique of the dominant currents of fantasy and escape in post-World War II American culture.
