The photographs of Johan Hagemeyer underscore an artistic continuity between the softer focus and romantic mood of Pictorialism and the bolder forms of early modernism. In this image, one of his most celebrated pictures, Hagemeyer crafts a geometric harmony from the architecture of the San Francisco skyline. Hagemeyer titled this image Castles of Today believing the beauty of modern factories and buildings was equal to the architectural splendors of the past.
