DescriptionThis large charcoal drawing is a bust-length portrait of an elderly black man. The man's body is angled very slightly so that his proper left shoulder is slightly closer to the picture plane than his proper right shoulder. The man turns his gaze downward, rather than looking straight out at the viewer. His face and dark shirt are described in much greater detail than his loose jacket, which is rendered in a more summary fashion.Exhibition HistoryAmerican Art Deco: Designing for the People, 1918-1939, Joslyn Art Museum, Omaha, Nebraska, June 5 2021–September 5 2021; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, Missouri; July 9 2022–January 8 2023, no cat.
