Sometimes wonderful art is associated with evil patrons. The porcelains of the Jiajing emperor’s reign are known for their beautiful purplish-tinged blue. However, the emperor himself was so cruel to his concubines and maids that one night 16 of them tried to strangle him. His empress raised the alarm and they were condemned to “death by a thousand cuts.”
