This dish was made with the highest quality materials in limited numbers in Kyushu, the island closest to the Korean peninsula. Porcelains made in Kyushu are called Hizen ware. The two Nabeshima-type dishes were made under the supervision of the Nabeshima samurai clan, aided by the knowledge and technique of immigrant Korean porcelain makers. Used in a dining service or presented as diplomatic gifts, the dishes’ designs echo the subject matter seen on other media. The bamboo motif symbolizes longevity and dignity, and the reeds swaying by water evoke a sense of tranquility and melancholy.
