Degas’s depictions of dancers inspired Jean-Louis Forain’s exploration of opera, theatre, and ballet. Forain often depicted dancers in moments of exhaustion off stage or interacting with those who paid for private access. It is likely Forain dashed off this sketch while watching the young dancer practice, as the drawing exhibits vigor and swiftness of execution and the intimacy of a backstage encounter.
