Some artists rely on preliminary studies as they conceive an idea or to assist them in the evolution of a concept. Others, such as Claes Oldenburg, might use them to test a theory. Oldenburg used this drawing to determine how the Shuttlecocks could be placed on the museum’s grounds. It playfully shows the original Nelson-Atkins building as a net with the Shuttlecocks strewn about the expansive green lawn of the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park.
