NOTES:
[1] Artspace New Haven commissioned a recorded performance of Astral Sea IV for the Dyschronics exhibition. This performance was led by Tsedaye Makonnen in collaboration with Dominique Duroseau and Jasmine Hearn. It was executed at the Long Wharf Pier and photographed by Tirop Kitur. A rehearsal of this performance, filmed by Adeyemi Michael and performed by Jasmine Hearn, is viewable on Tsedaye Makonnen's website. Separately, Artspace New Haven held a Tsedaye Makonnen performance followed by a conversation with the artist at the Long Wharf Theater on December 4, 2021.
[2] Simone Leigh was chosen to represent the United States at the 59th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia in 2022. As part of her exhibition at the U.S. Pavillion, Simone Leigh brought together scholars, artists, and activists for her project Loophole of Retreat: Venice. Tsedaye Makonnen participated by performing Astral Sea IV.
[3] While Astral Sea IV was not exhibited in The Metropolitan Museum of Art's exhibition Africa and Byzantium that ran from November 19, 2023 to March 3, 2024, the textile piece was activated in a site-specific performance at the museum in response to the Africa and Byzantium exhibition. The MetLiveArts performance was choreographed by Tsedaye Makonnen, also credited as the textile designer. Jasmine Hearn and Adia are named as the movement artists. Alsarah was the musician.
