DescriptionThis oil painting features a young black boy depicted in three-quarter view. The boy holds an archer’s bow in his right hand. His eyes look over his right shoulder, a slight smile across his face. He is wearing a green outer coat with golden stripes and buttons accenting it. He wears a white collared shirt underneath. The portrait is captured within a brown, neutral toned oval trompe-l’oeil frame.Exhibition History

NOTES:

[1] Odette Leven-Foussier was the daughter of Charles Edmond Veil-Picard (1856–1947) and Marie Catherine Adélaïde Saint Remÿ (1874–1969). Leven-Foussier’s grandchildren remember the painting in the last apartment she owned, and they suggest that since she was a collector, she perhaps bought the painting herself. See Virginia Brilliant to Aimee Marcereau DeGalan, October 18, 2024, NAMA curatorial files.
