Provenance

Purchased from the artist by Durlacher Brothers, New York, stock no. 344, possibly May 15, 1946-1948 [1];

Their gift to The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, 1948 [2].

NOTES:

[1] The purchase date is recorded in the Durlacher stock book as May 15, 1916. This is likely an error, as the artist would have only been 14 years old at the time. Based on the purchase dates of other objects recorded on the same stock book page, it would make sense for the actual date to be May 15, 1946. Getty Research Library, Los Angeles, Durlacher Brothers Records, Box 14, Ledger 1937-1966, copy in Nelson-Atkins curatorial files.

[2] Although the object is recorded in the Durlacher Brothers stock book, it is recorded in the Nelson-Atkins records as a gift from the gallery’s director, R. Kirk Askew, Jr.
