Gallery Label

The bold dynamism of this painting captures the energy of the Mediterranean landscape surrounding Vallauris, France. It was at the Madoura Pottery in Vallauris that Picasso created nearly 2,000 ceramic works in one year. There, he also met the woman who would become his wife: Jacqueline Roque. Later, the two lived in nearby Cannes.

Valentin purchased a number of Picasso works from Galerie Louise Leiris at this time; it is likely he purchased this painting from Galerie Louise Leiris as well.
