DescriptionThis lithograph shows a man sitting on a barstool holding a telephone receiver. The base of the phone sits on a table to his left. A heavy shadow of the man’s figure is cast on a wall directly behind him to the left.Gallery LabelFormer University of Kansas professor of painting Richard Dishinger used only grays and blacks for this dramatic composition. Its angular shapes and dark shadows create a film noir effect. Wrong Number also reveals how lithography can capture the powerful immediacy of an artist’s mark-making. “I love the strength of drawing in it,” Michael Sims shared. “He always drew with his whole body, not just his hand or wrist.” Dishinger’s bold, agitated lines convey the annoyance that can accompany receiving a call meant for someone else.
