DescriptionThis key stone proof is printed all in black on buff paper. The right half is taken up by a fox dressed as a clown in pants with striped suspenders and a ruff. He holds a brimmed hat with a creased crown and streamer in his proper left paw. He dances nimbly on bare hairy paws, a bushy tail spreading beneath his feet. He has clown makeup on his face and holds a ball in his proper right paw. Next to him on his left is another animal clown dressed in a costume with a ruff, with a curly tail. This clown holds aloft in his proper right hand a wand topped by a neck enclosed in a patterned box and a face in profile. The face wears a crown. Behind the clowns, a spiral spouting a flame. On the left of the image, a broken ladder over a ceramic jar and a ceramic bowl. In the background, concentric circles on the left and a sunburst on the right.Provenance
