DescriptionThis is a polychrome ōban woodblock print. It depicts two figures: Yoshioka Kanefusa 吉岡兼房and Nagoya Sanzaemon 奈古谷三左エ門. Their names appear in the two cartouches on the left. Yoshioka Kanefusa (active in the second half of the sixteenth century), also known as Yoshioka Naotsuna, was a historical figure known for his swordsmanship. He stands in the middle, raising his arm, holding a black, closed folding fan. A black cloth covers his head. He is wearing a dark-drown haori (jacket) and a pair of hakama(pants) with shippō (Seven Treasures) patterns. Nagoya Sanzaemon appears to be playing the role of tengu, a winged supernatural being with a small hat of yamabushi (mountain priest). Sanzaemon covers his head with his left arm to defend himself from Kanefusa.
