DescriptionImage of the shirtless man wearing jeans with a red belt. He faces away from the viewer and his back is covered in water droplets as he walks through a swarm of mayflies. He stands in the center of the frame with a rocky shoreline that leads to a hill scattered with shrubs, grasses, and a clear blue sky.Gallery Label
While walking along the banks of an Oklahoma lake with a family of catfish noodlers (a form of fishing using bare hands and feet), Holly Lynton noticed that one of the boys was suddenly swarmed by mayflies. She recalls: "Stephen became quite disconcerted by them, though they're not dangerous. They don't bite, though they do stick to you." The slight forward hunch of his shoulders suggests vulnerability, and Lynton saw this moment as an example of surrendering to nature. She also saw it as a gift since "mayflies only live for one day."
