DescriptionImage of a woman seated in a chair that is attached to an open parachute; a wooden platform above a metal armature is partially visible upper left.Gallery LabelThis delightfully candid image depicts Amelia Earhart making her first parachute jump from a 115-foot tower in Prospertown, New Jersey.
Earhart became an international celebrity after making several high-profile solo flights between 1932 and 1935. In the months before this photograph was taken, she flew solo from Hawaii to California, from Los Angeles to Mexico City, and from Mexico City to New York. These accomplishments, the first for a woman pilot, garnered international press and several prestigious awards.
