DescriptionImage of a woman wearing a felted wool Peter Pan style hat with two feathers tucked into a folded seam. The woman's head is tilted down so that the hat covers the left side of her face.Gallery LabelIn the 1930s, avant-garde artistic techniques began to permeate fashion design and photography. Ilse Bing’s striking and unusual photograph of a hat designed by House Caroline Reboux (French, active 1870–1956) features a slanting angle and tight crop, highlighting its textures and form.
A self-taught photographer, Bing moved to Paris, France, in 1930, where she worked as a freelance photographer for various European and American publications. She received her first assignments for Harper’s Bazaar thanks to the French American heiress and socialite Daisy Fellowes (featured in this photograph), who served as a correspondent for Harper’s Bazaar from 1933 to 1935.
