DescriptionUsing fine black lines, this drypoint print depicts three distinct groups of men surrounded by hilly outcroppings. These elegantly dressed men are the participants and observers of what appears to have been a duel that has just taken place. Standing in the middle ground near the left side of the composition is a trio of men the includes the successful marksman who is shown in profile with his pistol lowered at his proper right side. Standing at either side of him and slightly behind are two men in long overcoats with prominent lapels. Both of these men hold top hats down at their sides in their proper right hands. In the middle ground at the right side of the image, the loser of the duel lies on the ground on his proper left side so that his body is parallel to the picture plane. He is propping himself up on his proper left elbow while being tended to by a group of three men. One of these men is down on his knees behind him and has reached around to the front of the fallen man’s chest with his proper right arm as if to help stabilize him. On either side of this pair are two men in long overcoats who lean in and over the wounded man and the kneeling man. In the lower right corner of the composition in the foreground are two addition men who are standing behind an outcropping. The man at the right has his back to the viewer and appears to be holding a coat across his arms. To his left is another man standing in profile facing the right. His jacket is ornamented with braid that drapes from across the top of his proper right shoulder, across this upper arm and over to his chest.Exhibition History
