DescriptionThis vertically oriented painting is composed of five horizontal bands of color stacked from top to bottom: rusty red, orange, red, black, and green. The artist has applied the paint using broad brushstrokes in a gestural manner. The delineations between the bands of color are loose and painterly rather than hardedge.Exhibition HistoryNone
"Abstraction is the spiritual art of our time." —Sean Scully
In Landline Tappan, Sean Scully created broad stripes that are "stacked in horizon lines endlessly beginning and ending." Layering and mixing hues as he worked, Scully sought the right color during the actual painting process. Here, his brushstrokes are free and loose, large ribbons extending from one edge to the other. Through this use of color and repeated bands, Scully seeks to convey a kind of deep, expressive emotion and recall a meditative state.
