DescriptionImage of young woman in satin dress and bonnet with basket over wrist as she carries a bowl. There are floor length curtains behind her and a staircase in front.Gallery LabelArtistic circles fiercely debated photography’s status as fine art throughout the 1800s. Oscar Rejlander, who studied painting and sculpture in Rome before settling in England, firmly believed that photography must emulate painting. Taking inspiration from staged scenes of everyday life in English genre painting, Rejlander composed his photographs with costumed characters like this housemaid. Based on the title—Come Along—the young woman appears to be called to attention by an unseen person just beyond the picture’s frame.
