DescriptionImage of a small group of people gathered on the balcony of a large stone building overlooking a city; billowy clouds are scattered in the sky and a body of water is visible near central right.Gallery LabelIn her early works, Margaret Bourke-White often used dramatic, elevated viewpoints, as seen in this image taken from Terminal Tower, a 52-story office building in Cleveland, Ohio. The tower stood as the second-tallest building in North America until 1964.
After graduating from Cornell University with a degree in biology in 1927, Bourke-White moved to Cleveland to become a professional photographer. The city’s industrial boom fueled new building projects, and she began photographing architectural views, selling prints to the wealthy businessmen who funded these structures. In 1929, Bourke-White became Fortune magazine’s first staff photographer. She went on to become a pioneering photojournalist.
