DescriptionImage of landscape filled with spindly twigs leading up to domed pyramid constructed of rectangular stones with shrubs sprouting up in between.Gallery LabelJohn Beasly Greene was born in Paris to American parents. Interested in both archaeology and photography, he made several trips to the Middle East in the 1850s to photograph ancient sites and conduct excavations. A master of the calotype technique, Greene’s photographs are bold, dynamic, and minimal. This rare trio of images of a noted burial mound in Algeria emphasizes his systematic working method. Greene circled the mound with his camera, producing a series of views from successive vantage points.
