Their portability and speed could capture a young man mid-air in a way that large format cameras, like the one being used on the right of this photograph, never could.
Meyerowitz would sometimes push the limits of his 35mm film to exposures of 1/1000th of a second “because if you made pictures on the street at 1/125th, they were blurry,” he recalled. “You know, if you hesitate, forget it. You don’t have but a fraction of a fraction of a second.”
