In this unsettling yet curious scene, a man lies sprawled on the ground as passersby, including one with a hammer in his hand, step around him. The photograph itself offers no explanation of the event’s cause or seriousness. Joel Meyerowitz was an early proponent of this non-narrative style of street photography. He embraced the spontaneity and relative anonymity enabled by the handheld 35 mm camera format.
