One of the most important African American photographers of his generation, Anthony Barboza is equally skilled photographing on the street and in the studio. Barboza, who participated in the Kamoinge Workshop, describes the collective’s aesthetic as "like jazz music," allowing richly varied responses from individual viewers. In the 1970s and 1980s, Barboza made many photographs of jazz musicians and singers, while also exploring the unpeopled spaces of the city.
