DescriptionOne of twenty photographs included in American Roads portfolio. Diptych - the left image shows a plane on a platform near the lower left corner and a small fragment of a building with many windows along the right edge; the right ight image is primarily white with a small billboard advertisement featuring a plane at the very bottom of the frame.Gallery Label“As a photographer I’m interested in combining images to alter associations by extending the image itself. A juxtaposition of images enhances this possibility … It is this act of transformation, interactively between images, that I find most challenging.” —Nathan Lyons
Nathan Lyons paired two photographs of airplanes set against a plain white background (pun intended by the artist). Both are in the air, but neither is in flight. Lyons brought his photographs into conversation with one another, inviting viewers to imagine possible relationships and new meanings. His photographs often include billboards like these, as well as signs, murals, and other advertisements across America’s increasingly cluttered visual landscape.
