DescriptionLandscape image of rocky terrain merging into steep mountain range with evergreens and patches of snow.Exhibition HistoryRotation 24. The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO, June 9 – November 12, 2017, no cat.
Joseph Vicomte Vigier learned the calotype (paper-negative) technique from Gustave Le Gray, in Paris. He made a major photographic excursion through Spain and the Pyrenees mountains in 1853. This travel resulted in a limited-edition photographic album titled Voyage dans les Pyrenees (1853). More than simple renditions of tourist destinations, Vigier worked in an artistic manner. His photographs have elegant compositions and emphasize subtle tonalities of light and atmosphere.
