DescriptionImage of a river running through the valley of steep mountains; evergreens in the foreground lower right and along the ridges.Gallery LabelTraveling with painter Thomas Moran and a group of geologists, William Henry Jackson used his camera to record the vastness and beauty of the land that would become Yellowstone National Park. The photographs made during that excursion, including this one, helped persuade Congress to pass legislation in 1872 recognizing Yellowstone as the first national park in the United States. Jackson later recalled his journey through this canyon as “the climax of the expedition.”
