DescriptionImage of legs wrapped with gauze standing in tub of inky liquid. A dark shadow looms over the faucet mounted to the wall.Gallery LabelThis early work by Jo Ann Callis suggests a strange narrative: a woman, her legs bound in gauze from the knees down, stands in a bathtub filled with inky black water. The work alludes to tension and discomfort in the domestic sphere. Though Callis asserts that the imagery comes from personal experience rather than from a broader political agenda, the themes she explores also figured prominently in work by feminist artists and writers of the time.
