InscribedPrinted captions on paper, attached to mount verso, in black type: "Punishment of the / Cangue. / Public Exposure in the Cangue is one / of the five legal punishments of the Chi- / nese Code. The Cangue itself is a wood- / en frame, weighing somewhere about / twenty five pound, which is fastened / round the neck, and rests on the shoul- / ders, and is broad enough to prevent / the prisoner from feeding himself / The name of the delinquent, and / his offence are attached, and his tail is / fastened so as to prevent escape, but the / punishment is not like others in the legal / Code, a painful one.-- / ¶ The offender is generally fastened / during the day to some public fastened / during the day to some public spot ad- / jacent to where his crime was committed, / and removed to prison at night.--"
