InscribedPrinted captions on paper, attached to mount verso, in black type: "Chinese Woman's / Dress. / Fashion is neither so arbitrary nor so / changeable among the gentler sex in / China sa in Western Countries, and yet / a more picturesque or sensible dress than / that worn by the women of Shanghai, / and herein depicted is seldom seen.-- / [¶] Expense is not spared in the ma- / terial which is often of the very finest / quality--the colors are sometimes very / bright and cheerful looking, but more / usually subdued and tasteful. --The style / of ornamentation varies according to the / fancy of the wearer, but the cut is never / altered.--";
