DescriptionImage of boots grouped in foreground overlooking people standing near car with curtain and camera on tripod.Gallery LabelFrom 1971 to 1973, Eleanor Antin staged 100 rubber boots in various settings across the United States—riding a roller coaster, visiting a museum, marching up a hill—and mailed postcards of the images to 1,000 recipients. Each postcard includes a photograph of the boots, title, date, time, and place at which the picture was made. Antin chose boots, in part, to evoke military uniforms, a reference to the continuing death of American soldiers in the Vietnam War (1965–1973). Together, they convey a loosely structured narrative like a series of film stills.
