DescriptionImage of pairs of boots arranged so that they lead up to a tent which is set up in a parking lot next to a carnival.Gallery LabelFrom 1971 to 1973, Eleanor Antin staged 100 rubber boots in various settings across the United States—riding a roller coaster, visiting a museum, marching up a hill—and mailed postcards of the images to 1,000 recipients. Each postcard includes a photograph of the boots, title, date, time, and place at which the picture was made. Antin chose boots, in part, to evoke military uniforms, a reference to the continuing death of American soldiers in the Vietnam War (1965–1973). Together, they convey a loosely structured narrative like a series of film stills.
