DescriptionThis image is based on an unmodulated ground of pastel color, primarily yellow, that appears to have been sprayed on to create a more or less uniform pattern from one side of the print to the other and from top to bottom. A thin line of orange-yellow is “drawn” around the perimeter of the print and one edge is punctuated by touches of yellow and green.Gallery LabelJules Olitski was a Color Field painter and printmaker. He established his reputation in the 1960s when he began to use a spray gun to mist sheer fields of color over large-scale canvases. So dispersed was the mist of paint that it seemed to have been breathed onto the surface. The artist then painted thin lines around the edge of the canvas, subtly framing the shimmering color. These four prints, a gift from the artist’s wife, Kristina Olitski, correspond to his signature painting technique.
