DescriptionThis image is primarily purple with several areas of orange at three corners. The image is based on small dots of color that appear to have been sprayed on to create a more or less uniform pattern. The print has a small green rectangle in one corner and a narrow yellow rectangle along one edge.Gallery LabelJules Olitski was a Color Field painter and printmaker. He established his reputation in the 1960s when he began to use a spray gun to mist sheer fields of color over large-scale canvases. So dispersed was the mist of paint that it seemed to have been breathed onto the surface. The artist then painted thin lines around the edge of the canvas, subtly framing the shimmering color. These four prints, a gift from the artist’s wife, Kristina Olitski, correspond to his signature painting technique.
